About Us

e are Amaru Spirit, based in the Amazon rainforest, outside Iquitos, Peru. Amaru Spirit is run by me, David ‘Slocum’ Hewson, and my partner, Yolita. We are dedicated to healing the body and spirit through cleansing, nutrition and the sacred use of ayahuasca

We believe that a modern understanding of nutrition and physical cleansing can be added to the ancient shamanic art of healing the body and spirit through ayahuasca, and the two are necessary and synergistic.

Creativity

I have spent my working career as an artist, and the last 10 years have been largely dedicated to painting subjects from the Peruvian Amazon. You can see artwork here. I strongly believe in the connection between creativity, in all its forms and the healing process. Therefore at Amaru Spirit all visitors are encouraged to express themselves in a variety of forms, or whatever comes most naturally.

Plants

All our work is with local plants and fruits – how to use them to clean and heal ourselves. The Amazon is an extraordinary powerhouse of plants – the most valuable plant teachers in the world come from this rainforest.

For all people who come to work with us, a great deal of time is spent on using fruits and plants to teach, heal and guide. They’ve been on the planet for many hundreds of thousands of years longer than we have, and even now we are only beginning to understand the full range of their usefulness and healing potential.
